An investor in Detroit approached our design studio professor to seek help on designing a Greek bakery that he intended to open in Detroit area. His goal was to have a Greek bakery that meets the need of the busy working professional in Detroit as well as college students in the area.
Design students were invited to be the designers to come up with the design. This bakery provides a sunny, fun and youthful environment for its customers to enjoy coffee and yummy pastry. The layout design focuses on convenience for the staff and the customers to be in and out quickly and easily. The smooth flow of layout allows easy and fluid operations to accommodate everyone's needs. A green wall is the focal point of the bakery once entering the space. It is associated with a healthy environment. Blue and white acoustic foam slats installed on the ceiling provides the sensation of Mediterranean ocean and sea, and they also provide acoustic treatment to minimize noise in the bakery. Customer seating area follows the nature theme and is separated from the operations area by using nature inspired carpet floor. Natural light is abundant from the large glass windows on the two walls in the seating area. Floor in the operation area and display cabinets are in dark gray color in order to allow the pastry and cakes to stand out. The display cabinet is a re-used oak cabinet. All other interior materials and utensils are produced with recycled and bio-degradable materials that are friendly to the earth.
Overall, this bakery provides a healthy diet and a natural environment to both staff and customers.
